GASTRONOMIC TOUR
Taste Antigua: From Market to Table
A 3-hour immersive Guatemalan food experience
🕚 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
📍 Starting Point: Jaguar Negro Travel (Antigua)
Experience Overview
Discover Guatemala through its flavors.
This is not just a food tour — it’s a cultural immersion into the ingredients, traditions, and stories that shape Guatemalan cuisine. We’ll walk through local stores, a neighborhood supermarket, and the vibrant traditional market before enjoying a full traditional lunch.
You’ll learn what locals really eat, how ingredients are used, and why food in Guatemala is deeply connected to Mayan heritage and family traditions.

🏪 Stop 1: Small Local Store (Tienda de Barrio)
We begin where daily life happens.
Here you’ll discover iconic Guatemalan snacks and staples:
- Tortrix – Guatemala’s most famous chips. Why are they so popular? Why are they spicy? Why do locals love them so much?
- Fresh handmade corn tortillas – the foundation of Guatemalan cuisine and a sacred Mayan ingredient.
- Octavos / Cutos – 1/8 liter bottles of Quetzalteca aguardiente, traditionally sold as clear “blanco” and now available in various flavors. These small bottles are part of everyday local culture and commonly sold in corner stores.
This stop is about understanding daily life.
đź›’ Stop 2: La Bodegona (Local Supermarket)
A look at modern Guatemalan food culture.
We explore:
- Local meat cuts and how they’re used in traditional dishes.
- Regional cheeses and their difference from international varieties.
- How local and imported products coexist in today’s Guatemala.
This gives context to how traditional and modern Guatemala blend together.
🥠Stop 3: The Traditional Market (Mercado)
The heart of the experience.
Color, aroma, texture, energy.
We explore:
- Exotic tropical fruits
- Fresh local vegetables
- Traditional spices
- Fresh seafood
- Handmade clay pottery and cooking vessels
You’ll learn how ingredients are selected, what they’re used for, and how market culture remains essential in Guatemalan families.
This is the most photogenic and vibrant part of the tour.
🍲 Final Stop: Traditional Guatemalan Lunch
We finish with a seated meal at a carefully selected local restaurant.
You’ll try traditional dishes such as:
- Pepián – rich Mayan stew with roasted spices
- Kak’ik – ceremonial turkey soup with ancestral roots
- Jocón – green tomatillo and herb-based stew
Each dish will be explained — its origin, ingredients, and cultural significance.
This is a full lunch experience, not small tastings.
